The story

My wife gave me this tongue drum for Valentine’s Day a few years back, something I’ve wanted ever since I knew they existed. The thing I really wanted, a Hang Drum, is way out of my budget. So I decided to sample this.

New Kontakt Version: I’ve re-recorded these samples in stereo, and managed to get a much cleaner sound with less noise than in the Sampler version. I’ve also added a sleek new GUI with some extra controls for more versatility. In a lot of ways this version is an entirely new instrument. I’ve done away with the pads that were in the previous version, but you can get a really good pad sound by playing with the attack time and reverb. I’ll probably make a dedicated library of pads in the near future.

Original Version (Sampler): There are three instruments contained in this folder. The 1st is just the drum played as it normally would be, with rubber mallets. I added an additional layer with me dampening the extra notes for slightly more attack and clarity. The second is the drum played with sticks for a more percussive sound (play with the mod wheel, it controls the HP cutoff). Lastly, I made a pad out of it by time stretching the original sample, adding delay, and then layering it with a reverse version and also a time stretched sample of some toy bells; again, play with the mod wheel for HP filter cutoff. I think the resulting sound is really nice. I hope you enjoy.

  • Awesome to have this on pianobook

Its so awesome to have this instrument on pianobook. Ive always thought they sounded so cool and im happy to report this library definitely captures the magic of the instrument. Its very resonant but in such a calming peaceful way, never feeling harsh or overbearing. You get three different patches here which is also a really nice edition including a beautiful pad. Im already planning on using this in an organic house track, i think it would fit so well but i think it has so many applications including scoring, new age and more.

  • Deep Space Drum?

I like the sound of this. It somehow feels a bit celestial. Could be good for sci fi?

  • Inspired me to write music for the first time in ages.

A characterful, melodic instrument. I love the main patch most, it just begged to be used as soon as I heard it. An unusual and flexible instrument, full of tone and character used dry and spaced-out and dreamy with a huge pile of reverb on it. Inspiring.

  • Simple But Versatile

As the title says, I like the different articulations available with this one, While you can hear a little noise, mostly seems to be the natural harmonic series of the instrument, It does sound good, the sticks do have a very forward stick noise to them, but when playing the lower notes, around and just above C0 there are some impacts that I can see making great punches in EDM or the breakdown of a good metal song, Highly recommend this if you are looking for some impacts. Additionally the softer articulations feel in some ways like a sort of dreamy piano. This one is a winner in my book.

  • Three nice melodic drum articulations

This bundle will give you three different ways to play this drum. They all play very nicely, they are responsive and clean sounding. My favourite is personally the main patch, but I can't say I don't like the other two, since they offere a completely different sound signature.
