The story
For all my “Music Is Everywhere” fans – here you go – ROB’S ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH SYNTH. Yes folks, another every-day-life sound that can be a musical instrument. It’s always a surprise to me when I start working with these sounds. I always ask myself – will it be percussive (yes) while at the same time soft and soniferous (yes), can I hear an application for it (yes), is it fun to play (yes), can it be manipulated and augmented with plugins (yes). If I can answer yes to all of these questions, I know that Music IS indeed everywhere and accordingly, should be sampled and shared. In the case of THIS instrument, I have sampled the original naked sound of the Electric Toothbrush (pitch – Bb3 – no tuning required) and only set the manipulation to volume and attack. As a fun side-note, I set the pitch wheel to +/- 12 semitones so if you’re old enough to remember the band ELP (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) you’ll know exactly what to do with the pitch wheel. If you go to the low register there are arguably some muscle-relaxing tones available (I’m too modest to suggest which muscle – as back-in-the-day we searched for a frequency that would relax a specific muscle). In any event – before I go too far down that particular rabbit hole – I hope you’ll take a moment to download “Rob’s Electric Toothbrush” and have some fun!
