The story

I had an epiphany while washing up and listening to a bit of Classic FM for a chance to rest my ears because music lives in my head 24/7. I decided to sample my Dad’s ‘Ranch Phone’to place into a song I’ve been writing and producing with my brother. During the epiphany, I intended to make an instrument using the ranch phone and complete a pass using the whole-tone scale, which creates the dreamy effect we know and love from our favourite pieces of music. However, the whole-tone scale method wasn’t working for the song, so I used it to create a motif instead. The sampler instrument is a simple creation that means something to us as symbolic songwriters and producers for the song written when our dad passed away in 2023.

This simple sampler instrument was created using the multi-sampler in Logic Pro 11. It has a glockenspiel sound if you use the octaves where the bell sounds at its best. There are no velocity layers for this sampler instrument. I wanted to sample the ranch phone and create an instrument quickly so the task didn’t slow down my workflow.
