The story

RJS Vocal Pads is a synthy instrument made out of vocal samples. The instrument includes 6 different sounds that can be layered and shaped with an ADSR.

The demo song also features RJS Classic Electric, RJS Drums, Percussion Palette, Hunter’s Percussion – World, an unreleased sample piano of mine, and ReaSynth (bass). All available on Pianobook, except the piano and ReaSynth.

The creative process of this sample pack was improvisational. I sang various notes and layered them 5 times. The layers were panned to create a stereo image. The combination was then run through a reverb (+ distortion, pitch/formant shifter and EQ for some samples) and the output was rendered into a final sample. A doubling sample was rendered using slightly different effect settings. The resulting samples were panned 20L and 20R in the final sample instrument. The starting time of the other sample was delayed, creating a more accentuated stereo image.

Tips for using the instrument:

– Try layering sounds to create different textures.
– Using the ADSR (presets) can significantly shape the character of the sound.
– Kontakt only: Make more synthy pads with the filter.
– Kontakt only: The EQ can be used to tame frequency buildups, especially when using the filter.
– Kontakt only: ModWheel (CC1) expression is available for both volume and filter cutoff frequency.
